Over the years, I've discovered one of the most important aspect of theoretical music is chord naming & identification, which will be analytically analysed. Although I won't be going into chord formation, this analysis is for guys who already knows their TRIAD CHORDS. i.e (Major, minor, Augmented & diminish triad chords)

To avoid overhauling, I will be dealing with just the Major, minor and Dominant chord analysis in this article & probably extend to other chord types in my future posts.

Key of C will be the basis of this articulated lesson..
alphabets, numbers & solfege notations will be the basis of analysis

MAJOR TRIAD

1 3 5
C E G
D M S

minor TRIAD

1 b3 5
C Eb 5
D mo S

If u notice, the difference between Major and minor Triad is the 3rd. The Root & 5th remain constant.
In essence, its only the 3rd that differentiates a Major triad from a minor triad

MAJOR 7 CHORD
The Major 7 chord is the combination of the Major triad plus the Major 7 note..

1 3 5 + 7 = 1 3 5 7
C E G + B = C E G B
D M S + T = D M S T

MAJOR 7 SCOPE/ FORMULA:
SEMITONE backward from the ROOT = MAJOR 7 NOTE

EXAMPLES
CM7
C E G B
D M S T
(semitone backward from C = B i.e T)

DM7
D F# A Db
R Fi L Di
(semitone backward from D = Db i.e Di)

EM7
E Gb B Eb
M Si T Mo
(semitone backward from E = Eb i.e Mo)

and so the scope works with the rest Major 7 chords
FM7 = F L D M
GM7 = S T R Fi
AM7 = L Di M Si
BM7 = T Mo Fi Toh

minor 7 CHORD
The minor 7 chord is the combination of the minor triad plus minor 7 note.

1 b3 5 + b7 = 1 b3 5 b7
C Eb G + Bb = C Eb G Bb
D Mo S + Toh = D Mo S Toh

minor 7 SCOPE/FORMULA:
A TONE backward from the ROOT= minor 7 NOTE

EXAMPLES
Cm7
C Eb G Bb
D Mo S Toh
(A tone backward from C = Bb i.e Toh)

Dm7
D F A C
R F L D
(A tone backward from D = C i.e Doh)

Em7
E G B D
M S T R
(A tone backward from E = D i.e Reh)

and so the scope works with the rest minor 7 chords
Fm7 = F Si D Mo
Gm7 = S Toh R F
Am7 = L D M S
Bm7 = T R Fi L

7 OR DOMINANT 7 CHORD
The 7 or dominant 7 chord is the combination of Major chord plus minor 7 note

1 3 5 + b7 = 1 3 5 b7
C E G + Bb = C E G Bb
D M S + Toh = D M S Toh

7 OR DOMINANT 7 SCOPE/FORMULA:

EXAMPLES
C7 or C dominant 7
C E G Bb
D M S Toh
(A tone backward from C = Bb i.e Toh

D7 or D dominant 7
D F# A C
R Fi L D
(A tone backward from D = C i.e Doh)

Have a wonderful day family 🔥
